A dog that is a sink.

Sinkdog is a 2021 transformation artwork by daleport996. It depicts a grey anthropomorphic dog laying on a counter, with a kitchen sink in place of an abdomen. It started getting attention in early 2022 and would become a minor meme, inspiring fan art. Sinkdog is frequently characterized as inspiring both confusion and happiness and as an object of worship.

Original Work[edit]

Sinkdog, originally titled Sink Dog, is an example of inanimate object transformation, specifically furniture transformation. Inanimate transformation is a common subject in daleport996's art, with other pieces depicting furry characters becoming things such as waffle irons, flower pots, and soda cans. Sinkdog is notable for her[1] facial expression and activity. Other inanimate transformation pieces often show the affected character upset at their situation, but Sinkdog is smiling and looking at the viewer. Her sink is running and she has a dish in one hand and a rag in the other, suggesting she is washing dishes in herself.

The original upload shows Sinkdog with a vagina, and an alternate version has dish soap leaking from it. Both images were simultaneously posted on DeviantArt, FurAffinity, and e621 in November of 2021.

According to Dale, the fetishistic appeal to him was the large abdominal cavity and the implication that she was stuck to the counter.[1] The character was planned to be used for other inanimate transformation artwork, but has only been used again once, as "Book Dog", uploaded on the anniversary of Sink Dog.[2]

Fandom[edit]

Sinkdog would get a few comments of praise in January and February, but was brought to broader attention via a tweet from user @andogyny in March.[3] They noted how "well composed" it is combined with the strangeness of the topic, and said it was their "favorite image ever." The image of Sinkdog attached to the tweet had the genitals censored, and was the likely origin of the writing of the name as one word.

Fan art of Sinkdog started to be uploaded to Twitter and Tumblr within a few days. From the very first known fanart by twitter user Deceased_Bunny,[4] Sinkdog was shown not as attached to the counter as intended but able to stand and move, which would be consistent in future art. Another consistent aspect is that Sinkdog is not sexualized, and fanart focuses on the humor or a simple celebration of the character. The second known fanart is the first to imply a holy or divine nature of Sinkdog, paring her with the phrase "And God Said, 'Wash your hands, or your family will die,'" lyrics from God Said by The Whitest Kids U' Know.

By November, an archival website was launched at the appropriate url of sinkdog.com,[5] with the mission statement "to make it easier for anyone to share and indulge in their appreciation of sinkdog". As of September of 2023, it showcased over 70 works, including animation, a plush, 3D art, pixel art, traditional art, and memes.

Sinkdog has been associated with the Postfurry movement, particularly in an essay by UtilityMonsterGirl.[6] The essay notes the near universally positive reception to Sinkdog is unusual compared to other fetish artwork that has gone viral, and cautions against trying to remove the eroticism from the original image when analyzing or discussing it, arguing that the culture Sinkdog comes from is worth acknowledging and celebrating.
