Tumblr is a microblogging and social networking website founded in 2007 by David Karp in 2007, and currently owned by American company Automattic.

Overview[edit]

Tumblr allows users to post multimedia and other content in a short form blog.

Tumblr and furry[edit]

Apart from being a powerful personal blogging site for many furries, artist or not, Tumblr also used to serve as a backup tool for many of them to preserve media on, especially during several of Fur Affinity's decisions on what type of content was allowed on their site (cub art, "aged up" characters, etc...).

Furry adult content[edit]

On December 3, 2018, Tumblr announced that effective December 17, 2018, all images and videos depicting sex acts, and real-life images and videos depicting human genitalia or "female-presenting" nipples, would be banned from the service.

But even though this seemingly just targeted "human" adult art, furry users saw their own and collected art being removed from the site in large quantities, forcing furry users to further move to other blogging/social media sites (Mastodon, X, Newsgrounds, etc).

And even with Tumblr's decision in November 2022 to allow "nudity"(but still, not sexually explicit images) back, Tumblr never regained the sheer amount of furry sites present way before the initial ban.
