NationCats, also known as Nationcats, is a webcomic and character series created by BlinxCat in early 2019. it's a history-aimed webcomic with much of its strips involving history, Vexillology (flags), references from other countries, and anthro cats that resemble national flags. No standalone storyline or plot exists as each comic strip is seemed to be based upon specific historical events or facts but has since mostly been focused on flags.

Appearance[edit]

The characters in NationCats follow a simplified "2000s"-sque art style that is stated to be inspired by VGCats[1] according to BlinxCat but also possibly based upon media such as Flipnote Hatena or Newgrounds. The cats typically have round heads (with the exception of some such as Chile) and white blank eyes, but they can also have pupils that resemble objects such as stars, the current series is more aimed specifically towards topics regarding very specific historical events, notable people involved in wars/history, and history and information involving Flags/Vexillology facts or knowledge rather then basing it off media such as stereotypes or common knowledge of history that other country personification media tend to do.

Comics differ from historical events, to historical people, and flags. For example, the Finnish sniper, Simo Häyhä, also known as "The White Death," is referenced in a comic of the same name.[2] and another example such as the comic "Which is Right?" which is based around the time in 1992 in which Cambodia used two flags[3] or how the flag of Friesland's bizarre design resembles undergarments.[4]

Both Cambodian Cats as they appear in "Which is Right?"

History[edit]

NationCats was launched as a public webcomic strip series in early 2019, with some earlier concepts appearing on BlinxCat's old DeviantArt page. the comic during that time was co-run by user "bobbdablue479" who helped with much of the finalized art style of the comics. In mid-2019, BlinxCat's satirical Deviantart account was suspended[5] under vague reasons. Shortly after the suspension, the webcomic was then moved onto Tumblr under the blog name "nationcats" and was revived in mid-2022 as a small comic series on Tumblr and Twitter.

The NationCats DeviantArt group was closed shortly after and a note[6] was left with one of the possible reasons for suspension being "shitposting" by one of the moderators as the account was originally made as a satire and "shitpost storage". The comic style has changed a few times with the changing of co-owners, with "bobbdablue479" being the first, "Teeny" being the second, and now that position being taken by someone under the alias of "Bella Cat".

A Twitter comic profile ran by a few members of the community was made but has since been inactive.[7]

The comic returned in June 2022 and relaunched, labeling all previous comic strips "Classics"[8]

Also according to BlinxCat, his inspiration came from NAVA, FOTW, and VGCats.[9]

Characters[edit]

Americat (a pun on "America" and "cat") is a mostly white cat, who appears as one of the comic's main characters alongside the United Kingdom and Canada. He has spiky hair, stars on his torso, and red stripes across his limbs, resembling the American Flag. The original comics showed Americat almost always involved with Canada or the United Kingdom.

Canada is one of the implied main characters in the series, along with Americat and the United Kingdom. She first appeared in Classic Comic #2[10], confused by the Cowboy slang used by Americat. She is a red and white fluffy cat wearing a maple leaf pattern on her torso and a brown beanie.

The United Kingdom is a mostly blue Union Jack-styled cat, first shown speaking in a British accent. She first appeared in Classic Comic #2[11] along with Canada.
