Furnal Equinox 2022
Furnal Equinox 2022 was the eleventh annual in-person Furnal Equinox convention, held in the Westin Habour Castle on March 18-20, 2022 [1]. The convention incorporated the existing VRChat worlds designed by Lilithe Lotor and her team, as well as NeosVR [2] and communications on Telegram, Discord, and Twitch.
The theme of the convention reprised the original 2020 theme "Retro Rewind" [3] with Guests of Honor Anyare and Doctor Wildlife.[4]
Due to the COVID-19 novel coronavirus outbreak, Furnal Equinox 2022 required full vaccines, implemented capacity limits, and maintained a mask mandate for all attendees, including those wearing fursuits.[5]. International travelers were required to submit relevant documents to ArriveCAN, Canada's international travel app, as well as participate in COVID-19 testing within a certain timeframe of their arrival and departure from Canada.
For the convention's return, the Marriott Westin Harbour Castle welcomed the convention with open arms. The front desk depicted pictures of previous conventions. A complementary photographer was offered on March 19. Welcome letters explaining the purpose behind the convention and the furry fandom were left in every guest room throughout the hotel. Door card sleeves depicted artwork from the convention. The lobby column colors were changed to reflect support for Ukraine in light of the Russian invasion[6], but also doubled to reflect the colors of the Furnal Equinox convention group. Signage throughout the hotel depicted artwork from the convention. Attendees enjoyed a 15% discount off all food and non-alcoholic beverages at the hotel's restaurants such as the Chartroom Lounge, The Mizzen, and In-Room Dining throughout the weekend [7].
The convention's official shirt was created by Anyare and adopted the 2020 theme, with slight but noticeable changes [8].
Attendees were so eager to attend the convention that a number of fursuiters began touring the hotel before 1000 on March 17, 2022 [9] before the convention even officially began.
While visiting the city to perform a show, Papa Roach's lead singer Jacoby Shaddix encountered the Tour De Fur just outside the Westin Harbour Castle lobby stairs.[10].
The convention recorded 2,231 in-person attendees [11] and raised over $11,500 CAD for the Hobbitstee Wildlife Refuge charity group [12]. Over 420 virtual attendees participated with 4682 total new visits to VRChat worlds and 5177 total new visits to Neos worlds.[13]
