A Taidum is an open, original species created by artist and 3D modeler Irix and are found primarily on the virtual reality platform known as VRChat. The original intention for the Taidum 3D base model was to be affordable and easy-to-use for people working with video game engines such as Unity or Unreal Engine.[1] While the 3D model costs money, furries are free to use the Taidum as their fursona species.

Anatomy[edit]

Taidums are described by their creator, Irix, as being a mixture of a wide variety of different species.[2] Most notable are their tails, which resemble that of an axolotl or tadpole.

Lore[edit]

Lore for the Taidum species is entirely community-driven and there is no rigid canon that Taidums must abide by—other than an extreme love for banana bread, which is a long-running joke inside the Taidum community.

VRChat[edit]

The Taidum avatar model’s excellent performance and small filesize have made it an extremely popular choice amongst VRChat players. Team Taidum (TAIDUM.1923), the official group for the Taidum community on VRChat, has a total of 1,860 members as of March 23, 2024, making it one of the larger furry communities on the platform to date.[3]

Games[edit]

Other than VRChat, Taidums have been ported to video game titles such as Stress Level Zero’s Boneworks and Bonelab, and the independent cooperative survival horror game Lethal Company developed by Zeekerss. The Taidum mod for Boneworks in particular has been downloaded almost 16,000 times by players.[4]

Trivia[edit]

  • A group of Taidums is referred to as a bakery.
  • “Taidum” was the name of the species’ creator’s first dog.[5]
