Controversy[edit]
On February 22, 2022, it was reported that Polybun was the main suspect[3][4] in the Normandale Park shooting that took place on February 19 at a Black Lives Matter vigil for Amir Locke, a black man who was killed by police in Minnesota earlier that month.
The shooting incident killed volunteer Brandy "June" Knightly, a 60-year-old white woman,[5] with one of the surviving victims being struck in the neck and paralyzed, another one struck in the abdomen, and the last two being treated at a local hospital and discharged. Polybun himself was shot in the hip by a member of the targeted crowd and hospitalized.[6]
The Multnomah County District Attorney's Office formally identified Smith and charged him later that day with one count of second degree murder, four counts of attempted first degree murder with a firearm, and four counts of assault with a firearm.[7][8]. He has since pled guilty to these charges,[9] and has been sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 55 years served.[10]
