Polar Den BBS

The Polar Den BBS was a FurNet computer BBS operated by Darrel Exline from 1990 through 1994.

Originally setup in 1989 as a FidoNet Point in Darrel's apartment in Whittier, California (off Nicolai Shapero's StormGate_Aerie), The Polar Den Point converted to a full BBS when Darrel moved to Dallas in 1990. From 1992 until September 1993, the Polar Den BBS operated on two phone lines during the day, and one phone line in the evenings.

Because of the way that interstate phone calls were billed at the time, it was cheaper for most of the online FurNet community to dial Interstate into the Polar Den BBS in Dallas than it was for them to connect Intra-state long distance to their semi-local FurNet nodes, resulting in the Polar Den BBS becoming the largest contributor to FurNet message boards throughout 1992 and most of 1993.

When Darrel moved to Prescott, Arizona in late 1993, the Polar Den BBS continued to operate there for a few months, but was finally taken down in 1994 to be reborn as Darrel's personal website at polarden.org
