Out-of-Placers (OoPs) is an anthromorphic transformation fiction webcomic by Valsalia. The comic follows Kassen Akoll, initially a human guardsman in the employ of House Ivenmoth. A mysterious artifact changes both his species and gender into a yinglet, a rat-like scavenging sapient species. Kass must now navigate a new society and come to terms with the aftermath of her change.

Setting[edit]

The world of Out-of-Placers is a low-magic medieval-era fantasy with many fantastic species, from the gangly scavenging yinglets to the insectoid indrel and baxxid. The series takes place in and around the port city of Val Salia (named for the author of the comic). Evidence of a previous civilization's knowledge and antiquities are present, adding to House Ivenmoth's regional dominion.

Synopsis[edit]

Kassen Akoll, unremarkable male human guardsman, is turned into a female yinglet by a mysterious artifact. She must now navigate her new body and the political pressures of House Ivenmoth as well as matriarchal yinglet society. She is promoted from nobody to yinglet-human ambassador, while her best friend Elim is seriously wounded. Other characters (often Out of Place in some way) also become the focus of comic pages.

Yinglets[edit]

Physical and social description[edit]

Yinglets are a sapient, diminuitive species with high biological diversity and mutation rate, manifesting in size and color variety.[1] The species has a very high male to female ratio and as a result is matriarchal. Due to this, most yinglets are bisexual to some degree. [2]

Yinglets appear ratlike and bipedal, with their bones and lower legs showing similarity to avian hollow bones and scaled legs. They take a raptorial stance, using their large tail as a counterbalance. They have a long snout with a single tooth at the end for eating shellfish. [3] This has the side effect of making it an impossibility to say a /th/ sound, usually replaced with /zh/ or /dh/.

Organization and politics[edit]

In the world of Out-of-Placers, yinglets have only been recorded in the last 138 years [4] and are considered the youngest sapient species. The Val Salian enclave of yinglets has had trade and social relations with the human settlement of Val Salia for the last five years. [5] Yinglet enclaves have created a network of trade and caravans between each other.
