Mystery Otter is a fursuit character worn and roleplayed by an anonymous fursuiter.

Fursuit[edit]

Mystery Otter is a brown river otter with a rainbow stripe on his head and tail and has rainbow eyes, worn as a partial fursuit with a grey hooded sweatshirt and grey sweat pants. His suit was designed by Lenny Mutt[1], and built by Arend Studios[2]. He often carries a plush rainbow trout named Feesh.

Identity timeline[edit]

When Mystery first appeared in the furry fandom scene in early 2012, he created a game of "guess the wearer's alter ego".[citation needed] He claimed to be male caucasian,[3] living in the United States[4]. He has stated that he has only one alter-ego[5], and that "time's up" will be called after a "whole year,"[clarify] after which point he will "carry [his] secret to the grave."[6]

  • April 1, 2012 (April Fools Day) - Yippee claims to be Mystery Otter on his Livejournal.[7]
  • July 9, 2012 - Mystery Otter held a raffle, with one of the prizes being the opportunity to ask him several yes/no questions about his secret identity, of which he would choose one or two to answer truthfully.[8] The winner passed along the questions to a friend, who has chosen not to share the answer(s) publicly.[9]
  • July 27-29, 2012 - While at Megaplex, Mystery appeared on the Funday Pawpet Show live, danced with OrlandoFox, and answered his choice of yes/no questions, "Are you a fursuit builder?" which he denied. Another question was "Are you Yippee?" and in response Yippee walked up to the stage from the audience, out of suit.[10]
  • September 28-30, 2012 - Mystery also appeared on the Funday Pawpet Show at Furlaxation, and danced with Twitch Da Woof and Kalypso. He affirmed that he has at least one other fursuit.
  • October 20, 2012 - Firr posted a Tweet claiming to be Mystery Otter.[11]
  • January 28, 2013 - One year since his first appearance, Mystery declared "game over."[citation needed] He declared it both a win and loss: while his identity was never publicly known, some[who?] had solved his identity, and are "sworn to secrecy."[clarify][citation needed] From here on, however, Mystery declared "no alter egos, just a happy, bouncy mustelid here!" In the journal post, this text was in bold: "FOR THE LAST TIME, there's just one of me."[12]
  • April 1, 2013 (April Fools Day) - Twitch Da Woof and Mystery Otter traded Twitter accounts, exchanging profiles and icons.[13]

Mystery's Meetup account previously showed a location in Schenectady, New York[14]. It now says "Ottersberg, Germany."

Appearances[edit]

Mystery keeps his location and upcoming appearances secret. So far he has been spotted at 40 furry events (29 conventions, 10 local meetups and the Funday PawPet Show) in 23 U.S. states:

There are seven metro areas where Mystery has appeared more than once (Orlando FL, Columbus OH, Pittsburgh PA, Dallas/Ft.Worth TX, Atlanta GA, Chicago IL, Seattle WA), five conventions he has attended twice (Furry Fiesta, Furry Weekend Atlanta, AnthroCon, Megaplex, FurFright, Midwest Furfest and Further Confusion), three events in California (Irvine, San Jose, and Vacaville), and two events in Nevada (Reno and Las Vegas). Otherwise he has not appeared in any state more than once.

Appearances so far are always on weekends, 1-4 weekends apart, with at least one appearance in every month in 2012 and so far in 2013. Mystery made two appearances in a single weekend on September 28-30, 2012 (Western PA Furry Weekend and Furlaxation, approximately 3 hours drive apart), and on May 10-12, 2013 (Furlandia and Elliott's Spring Gathering, about 800 miles apart). Mystery appeared for four consecutive weekends (February 22 through March 17, 2013) in all four time zones across the continental US.[56]

At most of these events in his first year, Mystery handed out free buttons to attendees:

  • First set (yellow) at Furry Weekend Atlanta 2012, Morphicon 2012, the MN Furs Spring Picnic and Califur 2012.[57] Art by Kipper.

Mystery has also distributed rainbow ribbons reading "Plays Well With Otters" starting at Biggest Little Fur Con[64]
