LinuxAvali (or Linux henceforth) is a furry from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, was born on August 15th, 1996, and joined the furry fandom in January of 2018. He is a technology enthusiast, software developer, second generation geek, and multi-convention volunteer. Linux has a Software Systems Developer certificate from the British Columbia Institute of Technology and currently works as a software developer employed full time. He currently maintains the websites for a number of conventions including VancouFur, Vanhoover Pony Expo, and Howloween. Linux is the current vice-chair of the BC Anthropomorphic Events Association Board of Directors.

Ponysona and fursona[edit]

While this section contains a brief overview, a more complete version can be found on LinuxAvali's website

Swift Dawn the Changeling[edit]

Linux's ponysona is named Swift Dawn (or just Swift) and is a Changeling with a black coat and blue mane. Despite being a Changeling, Swift has more pony-like features then a typical Changeling, such as pony ears and a full mane and tail. His wings are also fully formed and lack holes unlike others of his kind. In the My Little Pony world, Swift is employed as a civil engineer for the Royal Canterlot Engineering Guild.

Rinne the Avali[edit]

Linux's fursona is named Rinne (pronounced rIn) and is an Avali with a blue and dark grey coat. The coat has a dark blue accent line separating the the two primary colors. Rinne's coat is made up entirely of feathers and he stands at just 1 meter tall, around average height for his species[1]. He has large, feathery wings coming out of his arms and a long tail tipped with large feathers. His mouth is lined with sharp teeth and sports 2 sets of large point rabit-like ears on his head. He sometimes wears clothing but doesn't strictly do so, and when he does, it's usually for a utility reason, such a tool belt for working on electronics.

Rinne doesn't have a fleshed out back story, but work is being done to address this. A lot of assumptions can be derived about him from the pages in the Avali Wiki lore category

This character wasn't developed until late 2021, Linux opting to use his ponysona in the furry fandom until that point.

History and fandom involvement[edit]

1996-2009[edit]

From the beginning, Linux's mother was involved with the science fiction and fantasy communities, attending and volunteering for conventions such as VCON, bringing her children with her to these conventions. From the age Linux could walk around on his own, he was helping out, assisting his mother in the VCON hospitality suite, as well as volunteering as a gopher. He would also go on the road with his mother to other conventions like Norwescon and Conflikt.

2010-2012[edit]

In 2010, Linux discovered the TV show My Little Pony and quickly became a Brony. He wouldn't really interact with the community at this time but knew of it's existence and watched the show regularly, occasionally making it out to local gatherings of fans but did not attend any conventions related to it. During this time, Linux would continue to attend VCON and other science fiction conventions but with decreasing frequency.

2013-2017[edit]

Starting in 2013, Linux would take a more active approach in the brony fandom. He attended his first pony convention BronyCAN in the Vancouver area, starting with volunteering from day one. Due to staff overlap between conventions, that's also when he would meet several people from the local furry fandom and conventions as well, namely VancouFur and Howloween, but he would not identify as a furry until later. At BronyCAN, he volunteered at registration, helping attendees get registered and processed for the convention. Linux would also participate more in the Vancouver brony community, attending meetups and hangouts more regularly. He would also join [SecondLife], visiting brony hangout sims.

2018-2019[edit]

After the 5 year run, BronyCAN would close it's doors, running it's last event in 2017. Because of the relationships he had made during staffing and attending BronyCAN, he was invited to and moved over to VancouFur staff, attending his first furry convention in 2018. It was during that transitional period that Linux would begin identifying as a furry. He would continue working at registration since he already had experience with the Convention Master software. In late 2018, a combination of VancouFur staff and BronyCAN refugees would bring a pony convention back to Vancouver with Vanhoover Pony Expo. Linux joined that convention, volunteering once again for Registration. The following year, Linux would expand this list once more, volunteering for Howloween, staffing the three mentioned conventions to date. He would also join furry Telegram groups and image boards. In 2019, Linux would take up creating the website for Vanhoover Pony Expo. During this period, Linux would enter the workforce, using the money earned to travel to further pony conventions such as Everfree Northwest, BABSCon, and BronyCon

2020-2023[edit]

Starting in 2020, the COVID-19 would start to make it's appearance. Linux would attend his last in-person event VancouFur 2020 a single week before the lock-down order came from the British Columbia provincial government. During this time, Linux frequented online meetups and conventions, volunteering for CozyCon and online versions of Howl, Vanhoover and VancouFur. He would also join VRChat and learn about the Avali race, ultimately creating his Avali fursona. Since there wasn't much need for registration staff, Linux transitioned to more online volunteering such as website work and managing the VancouFur and CozyCon Minecraft server. He also joined the BC Anthropomorphic Events Association board of directors that oversees Vanhoover and VancouFur. As the pandemic restrictions subsided, he would acquire more website roles at additional conventions, as well as join other furry related side projects. He would also trial volunteering at Everfree Northwest, FurEh, and BABSCon as well as attending Trotcon

Convention Services Support[edit]

In 2021, Astra connected with Linux and brought him onto Convention Services Support. The goal was to create software for use by conventions to ease their optional burdens and support the convention. The software is largely meant to be a compliment to Trapa's existing Convention Master software and integrate with it at a later date. Linux would take up front end development (the website interface) while Astra would handle the back end (the server and database). Additional members included Beekin for the business side and ShadowsMyst for design and art. At current, a schedule module has been developed that's currently in used by Vanhoover, VancouFur, and Howloween, with more features on the way.

The Avali plush project[edit]

Going into 2022, Linux was contacted by Aphinity to assist with the development of a custom website to facilitate the designing and sales of custom Avali plushies. With the help of Tritty, a custom WordPress plugin was developed. The plugin would allow customers to design their OC by selecting colors and have a dynamically generated image preview it, with the option to buy a plushie with those colors. The plushies went on sale for their second run as the first was done prior to having a website. The plushies are currently in development by RimiPlushies and are slowly being delivered as completed.
