An early sketch of Buckles

David Gilbert (born May, 1971, in Syracuse, New York, USA) is the creator of the comic Buckles.

Gilbert began drawing at a very early age. Being inspired to become a professional cartoonist by Jim Davis, he aspired to develop a style that would help him get a job for Disney as he drew comic strips for his high school and college. At the same time, Gilbert found a small animation company called Animotion where he began learning animation. It was there, in September 1994, that he created the character Buckles. The dog was patterned after his own personality and quirks. Soon in 1996, Buckles was syndicated and began appearing in newspapers nationwide.

Gilbert was a guest of honor at Midwest FurFest 2004.
