DBY106698, or most commonly known as Mario, is a furry in the Chicagoland area. He is in relationship with Selene_the_Corgi, and introduced her to the Furry Fandom. DBY was participating in furry behavior online, including having a fursona and Role-playing in MSN Chatrooms, without knowing such mannerisms were common attributes of a community. He first learned of furries existing when his online friend, Charmageddon, invited him to Midwest FurFest in 2008, since he lived locally to where the convention was being held. Having little information about the event or community, he attended while wearing a Sonic the Hedgehog t-shirt in order to "blend in". Upon seeing all the fursuits and wondrous outfits, he returned the next day in the costume that has become his signature: Super Mario.

Since then, he has actively been participating in different events, conventions, and social medias. Overall, he tends to keep a quieter, low profile as opposed to being involved with the more active dramatic aspects of the community. DBY continues to dress as Super Mario and has debut many new outfits at Midwest Furfest, where he is now staff as Head of Video Games. His choice in outfit as a highly recognized character has made him very approachable by others who have questions. One of his favorite memories of such being a couple, whom were staying at the host hotel when fursuiters began to appear, that approached him saying "Oh thank goodness! It's Mario! He'll know what's going on. I can ask him."

Jumping In To Help[edit]

The first time DBY took an active role in convention work was during the chemical incident at Midwest Furfest 2014. After leaving the Whose Lion is it Anyway panel, he noticed a few fire fighters heading into back areas while elevators had been blocked, with staff informing them they were not letting people go to the higher floors. Instinctively, he called his roommates and told them to start getting ready to move just in case, as something was going on. Shortly after, the fire alarms began to sound for everyone to evacuate. During these events, many attendees took shelter in the neighboring Donald E. Stephens Convention Center and began to wander about. Being familiar with the building, he worked with staff to help contain attendees that gained access to parts of the DESCC while still allowing them access to water and restrooms. The DESCC provided an area for attendees to gather during the incident, at which time DBY helped staff round up attendees and move them to the designated place. It was briefly circulating on Twitter as a result. [1]

Zootopia Screening Event[edit]

With the announcement of the Zootopia movie, DBY thought it would be a great idea to organize a private screening for furries. Knowing Midwest Furfest was held near a movie theater, he suspected the theater would be familiar with furries. Dubbing the even "Zootopia Furfest" due to its location, DBY and Selene worked to get the details and framework in place. The event got the attention of Midwest Furry Fandom, Inc. itself, which was considering the idea of doing an event as well. After meeting with Duncan da Husky and Takaza J. Wolf, the event became a combined effort with Midwest Furfest and Wolfhusky Events. DBY and Selene were still actively involved in the operations throughout the process. [2]

Fursquared Attendance[edit]

Wanting to explore other cons, DBY attended Fursquared from 2016 to 2019. During this time, he appreciated the smaller, more homely feel of the convention and got a sponsor badge for the first time. In 2017, a harmless joke ended up earning more money for the charity. With the purchase of a new vehicle, DBY negotiated for a standee of a Kia Hamster from the dealer. The standee was snuck into the hotel and quietly hidden in a random location. The idea was to randomly move it to another location when no one was around, but at some point it began to get moved around by others and was never seen again. Later on, he found out that the standee made it to the charity auction where the crowd demanded it be auctioned as well. Alkali_Bismuth was reluctant to, not knowing who it belonged to, but eventually caved in. Wanting to keep it a mystery of who brought the standee, but also put Alkali's conscience at ease, DBY obtained another Kia Hamster standee and brought it to another Fursquared. Dressed as a mage with his face covered, he brought the standee and presented it to Alkali before leaving without saying a word. To this day, DBY does not know where either standee is nor how much they may have earned for the charity.

Midwest FurFest Attendance[edit]

Being local to the convention, DBY has made an appearance at each Midwest Furfest since his first one in 2008. After the success of the Zootopia event, he became staff for the Gaming area in 2016. Being at home in this department, his contributions to help attendees have fun while attending the convention is something he loves to do. He also realizes the importance of it to the con by providing a familiar and welcoming way for people to connect with one another. Games allow people to escape the "hecticness" that attending a large convention can have, so attendees can reduce the strain while still feeling like they are part of the con. Working his way up to Head of Video Games, DBY tries to have a variety of games available to appeal to different tastes, while putting focus on multiplayer to allow the most people to play at any given time.

Since becoming staff, DBY has hosted a contest each year that challenges players to take on familiar games in strange new ways. These challenges are usually achieved through the use of strangely designed controllers and/or manipulation devices, such as Game Genie or Action Replay. The challenges have become a staple of the Gaming area, with participants returning to see the newest oddity.
