101 Dalmatians
101 Dalmatians (sometimes written as One Hundred and One Dalmatians) is a Disney American animated film based on the novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. It was the seventeenth in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, the film was originally released to theaters on January 25, 1961 by Buena Vista Distribution.[1]. It was later redone as a live action film in 1996.[2] It was followed by a sequel, 102 Dalmatians in 2000.
The film features Rod Taylor as the voice of Pongo, the first of the dalmatians, and Betty Lou Gerson as the voice of the villainous Cruella de Vil. The plot centers on the fate of the kidnapped puppies of Pongo and Perdita.[3]
Plot[edit]
The storyline revolves around a dalmatian named Pongo, who originally lives with his owner, Roger Radcliffe, in a London bachelor flat before they meet Anita, an englishwoman who also owns a (female) dalmation named Perdita. Anita and Roger marry, and their dogs have puppies at which point the Antagonist, Cruella De Vil, comes in and offers to buy the puppies. Roger and Anita decline. A while later, Cruella Hires Jasper and Horace Badun to steal the puppies. Eventually the 15 puppies belonging to Perdita, along with 86 other dalmatian puppies are returned to the home.[4]
TV series[edit]
An animated television program was created adapted from the film. It has a few more elements from the original novel.
- Cadpig is introduced. In the book, she was the one who was nearly stillborn, not Lucky.
- Lucky's pattern is a horseshoe, reflecting the book and his name origin.
- Spot is introduced, a chicken who wants to be a dog.
101 Dalmatian Street[edit]
Another animated series was created as sort of a sequel series.
