American Furry: Life, Liberty and the Fursuit of Happiness was to be a documentary on fursuit culture in America from Brooklyn-based filmmaker, Marianne Shaneen. A two part teaser was released by BoingBoingTV through YouTube in early December of 2007. However, in mid 2012, an official website for the film was established. According to its original premise, the film would have focused on the personal lifestyle of the furry subculture mixing different narratives to tell it's story, which included but was not limited to, one on one interviews, reenactments, animation and footage shot following the fursuiters around. It would receive funding through independent film grants and was backed by filmmaker Peggy Ahwesh.
Although the final version would have also focused on it's subjects from the original teasers; Solion, 2, The Ranting Gryphon, Stalking Cat and furry co-founders, Mark Merlino and Rod O'Riley, it would unfortunately not come to fruition due to the filmmaker making changes during the film's production. According to the film's subjects, the original funding for the film had expired, all communication would cease by 2014 and the film's website would go defunct in 2020. The personal disinterest by other interviewees as well as the passing of Stalking Cat may have contributed to Shaneen's departure from the film.
American Furry was featured in Times Online's Web Watcher section in April 2008.
