Wikipedia is a free-content non-profit online encyclopedia using MediaWiki software, written, edited and maintained by a community of volunteers, collectively known as Wikipedians, through open collaboration and the use of the wiki-based editing system MediaWiki.

History[edit]

Founded by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger on January 15, 2001, it is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, an American nonprofit organization that employed a staff of over 700 people by October 2023.

Overview[edit]

Wikipedia is the largest and most-read reference work in history. It consistently ranks as one of the 10 most popular websites in the world, and as of 2024, it is ranked the 5th most visited website on the Internet by Semrush.[1]

The fundamental principles of the Wikipedia community are embodied in the "Five pillars", while the detailed editorial principles are expressed in numerous policies and guidelines intended to appropriately shape content. The five pillars are:

  • Wikipedia is an encyclopedia.
  • Wikipedia is written from a neutral point of view (NPOV).
  • Wikipedia is free content that anyone can use, edit, and distribute.
  • Wikipedia's editors should treat each other with respect and civility.
  • Wikipedia has no firm rules.

Wikipedia and furry[edit]

Wikipedia front page displaying a furry topic

Wikipedia hosts a large amount of furry related articles and it also has articles about the furry fandom in a wide variety of other languages; however - like the furry wiki WikiFur's own language projects - they are of varying quality and may not be actively maintained (For more about the differences between Wikipedia and WikiFur, see: WikiFur is not Wikipedia).

WikiFur uses the same software as Wikipedia but mostly covers topics relevant to the furry community, including topics of general interest if they have aspects of furry interest not covered by general-interest sources such as Wikipedia.

When it comes to furry fandom, the most developed project is the English Wikipedia, with around 23,018 articles on related topics as of 2024. Editing is loosely organized by WikiProject Furry. Quality has improved over time (with a few "good articles"), but still suffers from limited participation.

The English Wikipedia can be a hostile environment for furry editors; topics of questionable notability outside the fandom (what some editors consider furrycruft)[clarify] risk deletion even if accurate and fully cited, due to the project's position on what are reliable sources and suitable topics.
