The kobold is either a short dog-like creature or short anthropomorphic lizard. The latter variant was mostly popularized by newest editions of Dungeons & Dragons, which is the prefered depiction of such creatures in the in the modern Western fantasy. The dog-like kobolds are to be considered a classic version, still popular in the Far-East, for example in Japanese anime and jRPG games.

Historically, the kobolds derive from German folkore in which the initial appearance was more goblin-like.
