An art exchange is a community (typically on LiveJournal) where artists can set up agreements to draw pictures for each other. Typically, art exchanges have a cycle of one month; each month, one artist's subject (usually a fursona) is chosen by the moderator and all community members will draw it in their own style. The deadline is at the end of the month.

In other art exchange communities, people are randomly matched; each draws someone else's character and has their own character drawn.

Art exchanges may include sculptures or short stories as well as drawn images.
