Can*id* applies to foxes, and with the "-id" means derived from. Whether foxes are really "derived from" dogs not being the point, but canis -> canine is the one that doesn't include foxes. Properly speaking, you're right. Should more emphasis be put on the fact that foxes and other vulpines aren't TRUE canines, despite being members of Canidae? they're canids at best, not canines. -- Ronin
